Individuality is the Word

Every eye is as unique as a fingerprint.

No two people are alike.  No two eyes are alike, either. Only a customized lens can truly account for the unique character of every eye. The more precise the examination of your eye and your visual patterns, the better your visual experience will be when you put on your new glasses.

Individuality is the WordWhat makes a lens unique? How much measuring data does it take to perfectly align the lens with your individual needs? And why will you enjoy better vision if you choose customized lenses?

Try this exercise: cover half of your face with a mirror while standing in front of another mirror. Your face will look strange to you – unnatural, even. Not a single person on earth has a perfectly symmetrical face. Surprisingly, this fact plays a role in how well you see through your glasses.  The distance of the eye from the lens, the angle of the lens in front of the face, the wrap of the frame – they all affect the clarity of your vision. Your visual impression will be more comfortable and more relaxed if your lenses and frames are aligned accurately with your individual symmetry and the shape of your face.

It is even more important to obtain such precise data if your lens is highly complex or you have a strong prescription. The greatest challenge is the production of progressive lenses

What individual data is important for customization?

There are many factors unique to you that affect the quality of vision you receive from your eyeglasses. Only a customized lens can be designed to account for these factors.

Which individual measuring data is key?

Pupillary distance: Measurement of the distance between the right and left eye from the center of the pupil to the bridge of the nose.

Vision height of the eye: The point where your left and right eye look through the lens is also different from eye to eye. It is measured from the bottom rim of the glasses; i.e., the rim of the frame.

Tilt of the frame: Given that every face has a different profile, the tilt of the glasses is different also. For the best vision possible, this angle should be used in the calculation of your individual lens requirements.

Distance between eye and lens: This distance, known as back vertex distance, also differs from individual to individual.

Frame wrap: To adjust the glasses to your face, the frame is slightly concave. Experts call this the degree of wrap. It also has to be included in the precise calculation of an individual lens.

I'm looking for help. I wore the same pair of progressive lenses for 14 yr., and with great satisfaction, once they were properly aligned. I had right eye cataract surgery recently, 5/21/10, which went very well. My new prescription is: Dist. R; sph. +0.25, cyl. +0.25, axis 40; L; sph. -1.25, cyl. +0.25, axis 15. Reading addition; R; 2.75, L; 3.00. I have worn the new prescription for 12 days, and have had 3 adjustment sessions with the dispensing optician, who is very patient and cooperative, and possibly very skilled--it's hard to tell about the latter, however. The latest session was yesterday, and I don't think the glasses are properly aligned yet. The process being used is for me to devise a test, explain what isn't right, and then the optician tries to adjust the frame to achieve alignment to correct the problem. It seems somewhat like a guessing game, however, and inevitably, more than one thing about the glasses gets changed at a time. I'm looking for an alignment verification process that is more precise, and would greatly appreciate advice. I can tell that the glasses are not quite right yet, but it's hard for me to ascertain exactly what is wrong. I imagine precision equipment exists for checking the actual alignment of progressive lenses, with the ability to track the patient's eyes across the full range of vision. However, even without such instrumentation, there should be some standard test patterns to view, at particular distances, with one eye at a time, both eyes, with an indication of what should be clearly in focus, and what the field of view should be for different viewing conditions. I would be very interested in that type information, and also recommendations on where I could go to have the benefit of instrumentation to accurately check progressive lens alignment. Thanks very much.
